On the same shelf in Morrissons:

0.72 / 0.432 = 313?

072 / 0.432 = 313?

72 / 0.432 = 283?

72 / 0.432 = 283?

72 / 0.432 = 277?

72 / 0.432 = 277?

And a “special” offer from Barratts:

How much for all three?

How much for just one?

Oh my word. That’s quite poor. I often use those price per kg things to work out relative values. I shall take them with a bushel of salt in future. It bugs me when they change the units on similar products… one in £/kg another in £/100g. Yeah, I know… not difficult maths, but still non-trivial to compare like for like.

Morrison’s also have (normal) Pasta Flour on their gluten-free shelf. So that a) if I’m trying to make pasta I can’t find it and b) if I’m gluten-free and not very clever I will make myself ill.

I’ve been trying, and I don’t think I can replicate any of their answers.

The suspicous thing is that three different brands all have the same price (and mass, but that’s less supicous).

It could be the case that the price per kilo that’s the only thing that’s right on the shelf!

tesco.com says that 432g cans of Del Monte pinapple slices in juice are £0.58(£1.34/kg) [correct] and the ones in syrop are £0.58(£2.23/kg) [wrong!]

So cheaper, but still no better on the maths.

Tesco home brand pineapple is £0.39(£0.90/kg) [correct], so you should probably ask Tesco to deliver some to you at Morrison so that you can continue your shopping with a clear mind.

    I worked it out.

If you take a can of Del Monte pinapples in syrop and drain the syrop out then it has a mass of 260g. At 72p, this is correctly showing the price per kilo of £2.27.

    Similar for the others.

Regarding the tesco difference, it seems that they have not applied the drained mass to the calculation in the case of the juice (perhaps because the juice is counted as part of the product), but they did apply the drained mass for the syrop product.

I’m going to have to go and buy a 432g can of Del Monte pinapple slices now, weigh them with and without syrup and then do the maths.

It’s not that I don’t believe you ian, but I need to see this for myself :-)

I hope you enjoy your pineapple supper, LP. It should taste nicer than the 260g of pineapple on the product information web page at tesco.com.
