It looks like the silver 4×4 over on the right (in front of the car in front of the car in front of the green coach) could play a major part in untangling things by driving off to the right and thereby freeing up a whole lane of traffic flowing bottom left to top right. Then the next lane in could move out also, then the next and wahay! We’re free!

Hmm, rich, if the silver 4×4 moves into right lane but continues going bottom right to top left, then the white fiesta-thing would try to get out, but would also be faced by the grey estate car that follows the 4×4. Say the grey car misses its chance and the lane of traffic starts to move. There’s a constant supply of selfish motorists at the bottom left so the chances are even slimmer of anyone making a meaningful space… I wonder if there’s an after shot somewhere out there on t’internet…

You see… when people say ‘gridlock’, they mean ‘traffic jam’.
THAT is gridlock. It is also why yellow box junctions exist.
What’s going on with the giant Mr and Mrs Santa? Don’t jump!
I’m not sure the box junction helps there … after all, all their exits ARE clear.
You must only enter a box junction if you’re turning right (left in their case) and are blocked only by oncoming traffic.
So only a few of those vehicles are legal.
