Stirred the paint (which said do not stir but had been in the loft since time immemorial and had gone like batter when you let it stand), glossed the architrave and lid, cleaned the brushes (causes lasting damage to the environment, do not dispose of in drains or watercourses, some local authorities have facilities), nearly poisoned the air in the whole house until I banished the drying parts and the remaining thinners to the shed. Which is the reason for no photo today.
Planed the edges of the door to make space for paint, and primed…
Tonight was swimming night, so got home at about 22:30. Just had time to chisel out recesses in the architrave for the hinges (which I got bang on first time! Pine’s great for this kind of thing) and glue the battens in place.

Chiseled out recesses for the hinges, nailed battens to the inner edge and continued to try and get the hatch door smaller than the hole.
In the pic you can see the burring on the side of the door where I hurried on Friday.
Drilled holes, inserted screws, attached latch, and drilled holes for hinges…
Sat was crazy productive, including taking delivery of a bed, lugging it up the stairs and assembling, receiving mattress from Mum & Mike and taking two trips to the tip. Hardly any of this qualifies as “towards the goal of renting the spare room” except for (a) we cleared about 1.5 cubic metres of junk out of there and (b) we now have a mattress to go on any bed I might get hold of.
In between work and salsa I went to B&Q and bought the bit of plywood for the hatch cover, and sawed it up. Unfortunately because I hurried I sawed it from the wrong side so all the burrs and stuff are going to be on the visible side. No I can’t turn it over because, uh feng shui, yes that’s it. Nothing to do with the box not being quite square or nuffink. But it fits and I can use some filler to patch up the slightly messy wood before painting.
more stuff to do: battens so that the hatch is a bit insulated when closed, fit hinges and catch…
Took the afternoon off work and made a new loft hatch hole:

The glue is drying. Next step is to put some screws in for strength and find a good sized piece of plywood to make a trapdoor with.
Then it’s time to clobber a hole in the ceiling!
I am being forced to face the fact that right now I am not prospering. I can’t quite afford my lifestyle and I’m not doing anything about it. I would like to think that this realization will spur me into action, but it hasn’t so far.
I need to get my arse in gear and perform one action every day towards clearing and renting out the spare room. I will blog what I done each day in an effort to embarrass myself into action.
