Hmm, going to the Brit Salsa Fest with a group of 10 people who I’ve known for years. I feel like a fish out of water. I’m used to the juggling convention way of doing these things, it goes like this:
- work out where convention is
- a few days before ask who has a bit of spare floor
- pack change of kecks, toothbrush, and a big bag of toys
This time we have:
- a house to share between 10 of us
- carefully planned the number of cars and where we can park them when we arrive
- a communal shopping list and cooking rota
- a lodged concern about potential bathroom conflicts
- someone bringing a radio despite there being a telly and dvd in the house, and 16 hours of dancing available daily
- a nominated bringer of washing-up liquid and dishcloth
- an ongoing discussion about what types of bread will be present
I’m bamboozled! I hope nobody’s offended if I’m too busy dancing to partake in group activities!

The group activity IS dancing :-)
all the rest is just because we non-jugglers like to be prepared and organised, so that when we get there we don’t have to think about where were going to find food, waste time in finding places to park, etc.. :-)
The radio is for listening to in the morning/whilst cooking etc. far less distracting than having the TV on!
I didn’t know there was a cooking rota, I thought everyone who wanted to was just going to muck in :-)
If we did it the juggler way, I for one would be rather stressed. But I am currently feeling very calm and relaxed about the whole thing :-)
Dancing’s not really a group activity, I find it actually quite antisocial, unlike cooking and eating together, which is far more sociable…
I’m glad you’re relaxed. Like you get peopled out, I get planned out I guess.
Actually you’ve got a point there with the dancing!
Maybe we should have just left you out of all the emails and just let you know the day before who’s car you were in and what you needed to bring :-)
In my head we’ve got the planning about right, rota’s are definitely taking it too far, but I think with 10 of us we had to do a certain amount of planning.
I’m certainly not saying planning is a bad thing, only that it’s a bit new and strange to me! I have years of experience of juggling conventions and this is only my second proper salsa congress… The last one we did much more the jugglers’ way…
:-) I’d find not planning very strange, and probably would make me feel rather uncomfortable, you know that feeling you get when you’re sure you’ve forgotten something! It’s definitely very easy to get to carried away
with planning, that’s something I’m often guilty of, so we need you jugglers amongst us to pull in the reins every now and again :-)
Remember we didn’t have to stand that close to each other when we were juggling. Euuuww…. ;-)
