Stage Time
I compered the show for chocfest, the York juggling convention, along with Martin (the yoyo monster) last night. What a buzz! I was down on the whole idea until the day itself - it was only my second compering gig and adding a second compere really alters the dynamics of the job. Even when it came down to the actual show I was thinking I’ll let Martin do all the talking and I’ll jump in if he starts to dry up or if I think of anything amusing…
We planned the first half fairly well, not all the gags worked but we pretty much said everything we wanted to say and had a pretty good share each of the talking. The second half was in a state of flux pretty much until half way through the interval, so we didn’t have material prepped for all of it. It began when we were 90% ready and there was a lot of blackout which nobbled the ability to compare notes while the act was on. As a result, we had to wing it a lot more. Martin didn’t seem to be jumping in at his alloted places so some impromptu reassigning of lines went on and we got through it.
Feedback was generally good. I had been worried about getting up on the adrenaline and babbling away too fast for people to follow it. A couple of the gags missed because of this, but mostly I gathered my pacing was good. The one thing I did get was that I steamrollered Martin a bit! Turns out those 20-second pauses while I was waiting for him to do his line were only about a tenth of a second long… Still, that must’ve been a spectacle, Martin not being able to get a word in edgeways!
Ahem.
